Mercedes AMG SL65 Black Series

After a brief review, I press the start button in the gear lever and with a deep snorting sound, the V12 wakes up with its twin turbo units running. On tone, it sounds like you're sitting on a Stena ferry. I'm rolling out of the Mercedes area and compared to the regular SL, the SL65 BS is much wider thanks to the large carbon fiber fenders that are on. So it's important to know where you have curbs and other things so you don't accidentally do something unnecessary with the 19 inch rims that are on

.

When I arrive at the Mercedes headquarters in Stuttgart and pick up a Mercedes SL65 Black Series, I am fully prepared that a misunderstanding has arisen and that a B-class 120 will be given to me. I had no doubt accepted that misunderstanding in that I had been naive enough to believe that Mercedes would lend me one of the total of 300 produced SL65 BS for a whole week which has a value exceeding a rather large 2:ai Stockholm inner city. Once inside and after some signatures on paper, I'm led further out into the backyard and there it is, black, wide and very very mean and it's anything but a B class and I have to pinch my arm to be sure that I'm not dreaming.

Once out on the Autobahn, you glide rather undramatically in the SL65 BS, but at the slightest hint of gas, the twin turbo units come to life and completely empty the cabin of air and a sound that feels more at home in an airplane fills the sound car completely. The SL65 BS shoots off like a rocket and I immediately ease off the gas as I am totally terrified of the power lurking under the hood of this best. It takes me almost a whole day before I dare to step on the plate properly and let the twin-turbo V12 work to its full potential.

My trip down from Stuttgart to the Nürburgring where I will use the car during the Scuderia Hanseat course is going like clockwork, it is obvious where this car is most comfortable and that is in the outer lane on the Bahn, no doubt about that. Taking the SL65 BS a bit over 300 is as undramatic as going down to the convenience store and buying milk. The top speed limit is at 320, but the SL65 BS is said to be able to top out at around 336 km/h. The reason why the block was put at 320 is said to be because the SL65 BS was not allowed to be faster than the Mercedes SLR, which is the top model.

There is no denying that the car goes fast, but to do so, it slurps up a lot of soup. I drove a total of 220 miles during the week I borrowed the SL65 BS and my gas bill ended up at a rather juicy €1650, which admittedly included a lot of laps at the Ring and one tank was enough for 4 laps! To be compared with the 911 Turbo PDK that we wrote about earlier where we drove 670 miles and the bill stopped at €1250, quite a big difference. But if it tastes good, it costs money and you get a lot for your money in a Mercedes SL65 Black Series!
