W Motors Lykan Hypersport

For W Motors, it doesn't matter what Nürburgring time their model Lykan has or how fast it will go. Of course it will be the best in both cases. James Holm was the first motoring journalist in the world to get to know the car and interview the creators, Ralph Debbas and Anthony Jannarelly, who met during their time at the university in Coventry, England. After that, W Group was started.

"From the beginning we both worked with design and we have drawn some yachts, extreme buildings and fun furniture, all inspired by cars" says Ralph. "We designed the Lykan together, but now I work entirely with the financial part and Anthony takes care of all the design. Nowadays we are called W Motors. The way we have built the company can be seen as a bit backwards compared to how others have done it. Most people work for many years trying to get their name out there. Then you try to find financiers to build up the company and finally get a product out. We did the exact opposite, Koenigsegg did about the same as us. We were privately financed from the beginning and tried to set up a functioning company structure and after that bring in financiers. By then we had already developed the design for the car, which arrived very quickly compared to others. The ideas were already there, which is why it went so quickly, if you look at early sketches, not much has changed compared to the car we have built today. The story started with me meeting Magna Steyr around 2005/06 when they showed one of the concepts, the Mila, that they present every year. Then I had only heard about the company. I then met one of their chief designers who also happened to have attended university in Coventry. I told you about my ideas to launch an Arab super sports car in the $3 million class. That same year at the Geneva Motor Show we met people from Ruf when they showed their CTRS3. A few months after that I called Magna Steyr and told them more about my ideas. The next day I was on a plane to Austria for a meeting with their entire team. Back then we only had a sketch of the car but I got to see their technology which was an eye opener. They took the plunge and decided that the car would initially be built by them in Turin. On the same day, I talked to the people at Ruf who also jumped on the train. The same people we had coincidentally met earlier. These are the same people who today are the biggest partners in the company and they are personally involved with all their hearts. They have a team that comes here and we have one that goes there. All cooperation takes place as an open book between us, which is a great advantage. One disadvantage, however, is that Magna Steyr is used to making things that are to be mass produced, so we often have to remind them that this is not the case with our products. There are of course positive aspects to this, such as security aspects.

The biggest challenge for us now is car number two which is the Supersport model. As well as prove to everyone how fantastic the car is, we already know that but not the rest of the world and no one really knows what the car is really capable of. Now it's up to proof and gain people's trust. We are experimenting with several different exciting things for the next model, Supersport. Partly a V8 engine that Ruf is working on.

A big thing for us is that Lykan plays the main character in Fast and the Furios 7. For the filming, we built six mules, all of which crashed. The last scene filmed with Paul Walker, before the tragic accident in which he died, was in Lykan. This is of course incredibly big for us in terms of marketing.

When people ask what is the difference between W Motors and other hyper sports car companies, we answered that there are two different categories of manufacturers. You have on one side brands like Pagani, Koenigsegg, Bugatti and even Ferrari with the LeFerrari and Aston Martin with the One77. These are cars around 1-1.5 million dollars that are built in up to 20 copies per year. These cars are street legal pretty much all over the world. On the other side you have brands like Pininfarina, Bertone, Giugiaro. These companies build "one off" cars for around 5-6 million dollars and for customers who want something completely unique. These cars are not often meant for the street but the race track but you are all alone in owning such a car. We try to position ourselves somewhere in between, we have a limited edition of around 3-7 cars in total per model fully approved and with a price tag of around 3.5 million dollars. What other companies mostly focus on is performance and lap times and how sporty the car is. Here we thought differently because we felt that something was missing. If you spend millions of dollars on a car, you probably want more than just performance. We saw a need for 24-hour service, a luxury watch and many other things around the car. We see it as a lifestyle that comes with the car we sell and this has none of the other brands as far as we can see. Because we have such a small production run, we can customize each car completely according to the customer's wishes. And of course we will try to set record times on the Nürburgring with the car when it is ready.

The chassis is self-produced which was important and a big step so it is not someone else's but our own. Motor is also our own but designed by Ruf. Important for us as a company as we try to be something more than just a tuning company. The gearbox can be had as a manual 6-speed sequential or 7-speed double clutch variant. Some customers absolutely want the sequential while others don't like it at all. We have had both chassis and engine approved together with our partner Magna Steyr. After this we have started to gather other partners such as iD4 Motion, Studio Torino, Cyrus Genéve and The University of Tokyo to name a few. From the beginning, the project was privately financed, which meant a big risk, but now we have a collaboration with a couple of banks. At the same time, it has been a fantastic adventure for us with all the attention it has brought.

The University of Tokyo were the first to construct a Hologram screen adapted for a car. This is the only car in the world with this technology. Now we have Nav, radio and video player completely in hologram, a floating image that you can stick your hand through. Completely unique!

With all the partners in place, we started building the first car that was shown at the Doha motor show. Then it was white and now it's blue. This was only a model and had neither engine nor interior. It was important for us to be able to show something even if it was just a model. However, it was the finished form that is the same as on the first production car.

The W in W Motors comes from Wolf, which has been my nickname since I was little. Lykan is a werewolf and describes the identity of the car. It can transform from a beautiful creature to a vicious werewolf at the same time. When you first see it, it's beautiful, but when you open everything up, it's ugly. It feels like we get a werewolf resurrected for every car we produce, and based on how the customer wants their car, we can decide what kind of wolf it will be.

We could have started W Motors in Italy or somewhere else in Europe where the history exists but then nobody would have seen us and we would have just become one of the crowd. Starting up the brand here in Dubai has meant that many people have become interested in what we do. There is always something new happening here and people are really excited. There are many benefits to lying here as well. It's easy to reach the rest of the world from here, everyone comes here too. We are the first car manufacturer down here, which of course means a lot and the name comes out immediately. Now it's up to us to deliver.

The company was officially started in 2012 but we have been working with it for 3-4 years before that. In 2008, we started the collaboration with Magna Steyr and made sure that everything went according to plan. In 2009 we started putting things together. From the beginning, the company is from Lebanon and no one had previously seen a car company like this from the Middle East. In 2012 we made the company official at a big event in Beirut together with Magna Steyr and Studio Torino when around 11,000 people from all over the world showed up. There we promised to have a car to show off within six months. No one took this seriously but everyone was talking about it the world over. Many people said that we should probably wait until there is still a real car, even though we had companies like Magna Steyr with us. What no one knew was how much work we had already put in. Then we built the white car that we could use for all the shapes of the following cars. Then we sent it off to the Doha motor show where everyone could see it. There we promised to show a real car by the end of 2013 and here we are now and at the Dubai Motorshow which has just been we had the real car. W Motors has many goals with the company but among the first was to build the first car which is the Lykan Hypersport. There will be two different models, Hypersport and Supersport. Hypersport is the first to be built and is based on absolute exclusivity, more luxury and more technology. It will only be produced in seven copies and will of course be one of the fastest cars in the world. It is also, as previously mentioned, the first car with a hologram screen. It comes with diamond-encrusted front headlights that you can choose whether they should also have either rubies or sapphires around them, which gives a very special light from the lamps. You can choose to have gold-plated seams in the interior. You get a watch for two hundred thousand euros. It will have a connoisseur service anywhere in the world, 24 hours a day and 365 days a year. This makes it more of a collector's item than a hypercar. The Hypersport will only be built in seven copies, after that a new model will come. Supersport will be a more accessible model but more sporty than Hypersport. Here we are talking about an ultra-light construction without all the luxury. more intended for the track. To begin with, we will have these two models, but every other year we will build new models with new designs and new names. A roadster and a special coupe are planned. By next year we hope to be able to announce how many cars we sold, but at the moment nothing is official. But before the car is completely ready, we cannot say that we have sold any car but we will start delivering in 2014. Right now we are focusing on test drives but many interested parties are here and see what we are doing.

Some complain and wonder how we can call ourselves an Arab car company when we don't build everything ourselves. Then most people forget that pretty much all car companies are structured in the same way and that they basically use the same technology. One car company that does not use the same technology as others and actually takes care of it entirely themselves is Koenigsegg and Danish Zenvio, but it can be seen as very unique. It was easier back in the day to do everything on your own, but doing it now, in 2014, is very difficult thanks to all the technology that is in cars these days. In the past, you could experiment a lot more, but now such a high standard is required right from the start, so it is almost impossible to start from scratch as a new player and you must not fail. That's why we collaborate with Magna Steyr, which has the necessary technology and expertise. They would never do this collaboration if they didn't believe in us. Thanks to having them and also Ruf as partners, we gain great credibility in the company and our products. At the same time, we have to do things completely in our own way, which is why we have all design "in-house". In about a year, we will have the entire production such as assembly, technology, paint and leather workshop in Dubai, which means we will be the first car manufacturer here. Right now the car is built in Turin, Italy. Our plan is also to open a design school to create something that hasn't been here before. No school in the area has modern design as a subject. If you want to study this, you have to move to England, the USA, etc. We get CVs every day from people here, but they lack what is required. We want to change this, for us it is about so much more than just the cars.

As it is a Ruf engine, the emission requirements will apply worldwide. Therefore, the exhaust noise on the car is a bit low from our own perspective, precisely because some countries have these requirements. Here in the United Arab Emirates, however, they don't care. Possibly we will have different silencer functions available depending on where you live.”

Now let's get to know the car more closely. That a car brand's unofficial slogan is "It's how you enter the club" is a slogan that would most likely have difficulty selling here in our little PK-Sweden. In the Arab world, and especially Dubai, it is a completely different five. Here the banks make giant billboards with pictures of Bentleys along with gold bars. I would like to see the Swedish bank that dares to try a similar advertising campaign. But when this is a working concept, there is of course a market for mass-producing the most extreme hyper sports car the world has ever seen. The car we are talking about is called the Lykan Hypersport and costs around 23 million Swedish kronor plus VAT. The Lykan is not just a super-extreme car with speed resources up to 400 km/h and technology that makes a space rocket seem outdated. It is also a rolling jewel with precious stones and gold details. In addition to this, a limited edition wristwatch from Swiss Cyrus for around 200,000 euros is also included when you buy the car. And as if this weren't enough, you also get a unique connoisseur service as mentioned earlier. All this to make the W Motors Lykan the absolute most extreme hyper sports car in the world!

As the heart of the Lykan sits a 3.5 liter boxer six with twin turbo units that Ruf was involved in building. The power is 770 horses at 7100 rpm, the torque is a huge 1000 Nm and this is achieved around 4000 revolutions. The mighty power is delivered to the rear tires via a 6-speed sequential gearbox. The sprint 0-100 should be completed in 2.8 seconds and 0-200 in 9.4 seconds. The top speed is around 400 km/h, depending on which gear you chose to have. To bring the equipment to a stop is a pair of ventilated 6-piston, aluminium, monobloc brakes of the carbon fiber ceramic type from Brembo with a diameter of 380 mm. The front wheel suspension is of the MacPherson type. The weight of the Lykan is 1400 kilos. For those who really care, the fuel consumption is around 1.35 liters per mile and the Co2 value is 311 g/kg. Something that the customers themselves will hardly attach any importance to.

As the first journalist in the world, I will now be able to test drive the Lykan Hypersport. No one other than the brand's own test drivers has been allowed to drive the car and after my test drive the car will return to Turin for disassembly and inspection over the winter. This is the first production car from W Motors so everything does not fit as it should and the finish is not quite 100%, something I take into account in my assessment of the car and its behavior. Just standing next to this creation evokes feelings that you remember from when you were a child and the first time you stood in front of a real Lamborghini Countach. Since then, I've had the privilege of driving most of the extreme cars out there, but haven't quite regained the same feeling. The Lykan's shapes are incredibly aggressive, anyone who misunderstands this car's attitude knows very little about extreme sports cars or cars at all. When you open the doors that go diagonally upwards and backwards, only the extreme shape becomes even more apparent! Once in the driver's seat, you are very little reminded that it is actually a car on four wheels that you are sitting in. When I have to press the screen in the middle, my finger goes straight through the image, a sick feeling! Fortunately, they have chosen to use some panels from Porsche, such as for example the AC control, something that in any case makes me feel some grounding in reality. The start button is to the left of the somewhat bizarre chrome gear lever. When I push it in, the boxer six wakes up behind me with its classic hissing growl. In this case, a little sharper than normal with a clear character of performance at the top. The first gear is exactly as it should be towards you, or backwards, so to speak. You have to be quite determined in the gears, something that will be refined in the production-ready car. Now the gearshifts feel rather like those of a rock-hard racing car. Steering is also a bit sluggish but distinct, again something that each customer will be able to choose how their car should behave. when i turn out of the area and onto the public road i almost cause an accident, not because i'm doing anything wrong but because other cars on both sides of the road are swerving to see what's rolling out onto the road. There is no doubt that this is an eye-catching car. At low revs, both the engine and the car behave very calmly, but just as the name Lykan stands for, not much impact is needed to change the character of the car to 100 %. The Lykan is the most advanced type of werewolf that can control its transformation between being a beautiful creature to being an aggressive beast. I wrestle in second gear from third and press the pedal three quarters of the way down, I don't dare to do more now, but it's good and good! The twin turbos and the boxer six respond directly to my command! The power is so incredibly constant and confusion almost occurs, this in mere hundredths before it's time to shoot in third gear. The same experience is repeated between each gear. The power is infinite! When, after a while of driving, I cast a quick glance at the digital meter in front of me, it shows well over 200 km/h and I realize that we are on public roads. I have heard that the police in Dubai are not fun to spend time with and I dare not hope that the car would be a free pass in a situation like this. So the task of the right foot is changed from pressing the pedal on the right to the one in the middle instead, the reaction does not allow itself to be delayed, the Brembo brakes do their job superbly and the classic feeling of the brain hanging in rubber bands appears. Enough that the driving experience is above normal in the Lykan, but I'm not going to stick under the seat that other cars I've driven might have been more impressive in terms of driving. However, what I unfortunately do not get the opportunity to experience is the feeling of arriving at a place, for example the Dubai Mall on a Thursday night when everyone is out with their extreme cars. That feeling when you arrive and everyone's eyes falling on you and the car when the diamonds are glittering probably cannot be described in words and this is exactly what W Motors wants their customers to experience. All other extreme things included in the purchase of the Lykan are a matter of course compared to all other cars. This makes it the most exclusive hyper sports car in the world!
