Ford Mustang Fastback GT 5.0

A new interpretation with an old recipe of a classic icon that makes the heart rate rise significantly.

Few cars have such a solid history to rest on as the Ford Mustang has. With a multitude of different variants during the 50 years the model has existed, they have now chosen to go back to the roots. The recipe is simple, a chubby V8 engine, manual gearbox and rear-wheel drive. But this is not the only thing that makes the heart rate rise. The story begins at the World's Fair in New York in 1964 when Ford chose to display its new model, a light, two-door car with room for four people developed under the direction of the legendary Lee Iacocca. With sporty and good performance as well as an affordable price, the model created the term Pony Car. After the launch, the Mustang concept was copied by many other manufacturers such as Chevrolet Camaro among others. After only four months, Ford could state that the Mustang had become a mega-success with over 100,000 cars sold. After just two years, there were one million Mustang owners. With this very popular car model, a horse power race started and in the late 60's a special version named Boss 429 with 575 horse power was released. The so-called muscle car was born with the Mustang and the model has featured in countless films. Most famous was the one driven by Steve McQueen in "Bullit" from 1968.

As many as six generations of Mustang have hit the streets since its launch 50 years ago. Not all have been equally popular, the bottom line is represented by generation four which came in the mid-90s. Curiously, it would be more than twenty years before generation five was released. This time, in terms of shape, inspired by the models from the 60s. This was a huge success. In 2010, the model received a proper facelift. Now generation six is here, which has really got an elaborate look, which feels perfect. Despite the new shapes, it is easy to see the genes from the original model. The interior is clean and stripped down with clear shapes since the first generation, especially with the shapes on the upper part of the dashboard.

What also makes the new Ford Mustang very interesting is that it is now sold via Ford's official channels in Sweden.

Clas Månsson from Månsson's car in Halmstad talks about how to invest big through a new concept.

-500 Ford dealers in Europe will have the concept. It was because it was decided that the Mustang would also be presented here in Europe, but at the same time the average Ford dealer didn't think they could handle the Mustang and Ford's premium line Vignale and all that it implies in appearance, service and know-how. It all led to the concept stores that were named the Ford Store. Stores are located in strategic locations and it is no secret that other brands like Apple, for example, have been looked at and how they have developed their Apple Stores. Just like with Apple, you can't find all the variants and accessories for a Mustang at other stores like you can at a Ford Store where everything should be there. The concept is structured in such a way that in each store there will be four so-called "Hero Zones", where cars from ST, RS, Vignale and Mustang will be displayed. These should look the same with a round loop of light on the ceiling like a halo as well as a special floor under the cars so that you can be recognized regardless of which store in the world you are in. We have also invested a lot in digitization. For example, we have a large powerwall with nine 55-inch screens where you can show a life-size car where you can build your car. We also have a so-called powertable with built-in 55 inch touch screens where you can assemble the car together with the customer. This is the Ford Store and we are the first authorized ones in Sweden. About five or six Ford Stores are planned in Sweden. What is also unique to us is our concept "Fly and Drive". We offer favorable offers with Kulla flights and Hotel Tylösand for the customer to get here and then drive home their new car and get an experience with the trip. We believe this will appeal to customers and also attract buyers from the rest of Sweden.

In terms of engines, it has been possible to get the Mustang both with good-sounding V8 engines but also with smaller options. This time too, it is possible to get a more frugal four-cylinder turbo engine with 310 horses. However, it is the five-liter eight-cylinder engine that is in focus here. With a push of the start button in the center console, the car comes to life. It's no monster brought to life but there's no doubt there's plenty of life and power under the long orange hood up front. 418 horses and a torque of 524 Newton meters is more than the wide rear tires can handle. Like a happy labrador, the Mustang wags its tail as soon as a curve comes. With your tongue right in your mouth and the right technique, the whole turn is taken with a nice stand, even with anti-drag attached. When it goes too wide, the car helps to stop it all before the accident occurs. To get to the hundred mark only 4.8 seconds are needed. Top speed is reached when the meter reads 250 kilometers per hour. What significantly enhances the driving experience and brings thoughts back in time is the short-stepped and very pleasant manual gearbox. Enough because it is convenient with an automatic transmission, which is of course available as an option, but it definitely takes away the sportiness from the car. To further enhance the feeling, there are a number of driving programs that can be set. In the comfort mode, you have a slider with nice throttle response and soft steering, while you get a stiffer and more alert feeling in the Sport+ mode. For those who really want to impress their surroundings at red lights, there is a launch control if you choose the GT version that locks the front brakes for smoky "burnouts". Despite these performances, driving programs and settings, the Mustang should not be seen as a pure sports car that can compete with, for example, Porsches out on the track. This is a cool glider with muscle for affordable money, just the same, but a little better, than fifty years ago. It is guaranteed to get the heart rate up once more.
