Seat Leon ST

The Leon model is one of Seat's most important cornerstones, new updates make it even more stable.

There is no doubt that things are going well for the Spanish brand Seat. So far, sales have increased by almost 40% compared to 2015. The sales targets for the year 2016 were already reached in September. A big reason for this is the new SUV Ateca, which we wrote about two issues ago. But also Leon, which is Seat's equivalent to Golf and one of the most important models.

Now they have just presented a new updated version of Leon. Gate Report was on site in Barcelona to take a closer look and test drive the new version. The first thing that strikes you is that there isn't that much of a difference. However, this is only an illusion as a lot of updates have been made both externally and internally. What has been done is at such a level, and with taste, that it only refined the already very nice shape and design. For example, the front headlights have received much more distinctive and powerful LED signature lights so that you can distinguish a Leon's identity more clearly. The orange indicators and warning lights in the headlights have also been strengthened to be clearer. Even the lights at the back have been given a facelift and have become slimmer and more elongated. Everything for a more clear and tasteful design.

With the launch of the new Leon, the Xcellence line is also being introduced. An optional package with more exclusive materials both outside and inside and a new paint in a dark purple tone called Boheme Purple.

The interior has been cleaned up a lot. Especially where the car's infotainment screen sits. Nowadays, you only find two buttons and a knob next to the screen, a "home button" and one for direct link to connected devices. The knob works in the classic way to control the volume. The touch screen, which nowadays has no sensor that activates it when you move your hand to it, is now exactly 8 inches.

Many of the changes in the new Leon come directly from the Ateca and that is also one of the reasons for the update. They want to move the new technology into other models in the range. Among safety and driver assistants we find Lane and front assist. Both systems actively help the driver to keep track of the car's position on the road and cars ahead. The car can stop entirely by itself if necessary if a car or pedestrian is in the way.

Enough because the Spanish roads have silky asphalt compared to our walls here at home. The new Leon is still perceived to be more sound-insulated, which is not so strange as a number of things have changed in the car precisely for this reason. With the DSG automatic transmission and the 150-horsepower diesel engine, the journey really goes like on clouds. The range of engines will be petrol and diesel engines from 90 to 184 horses. You will also be able to choose four-wheel drive and manual or automatic transmission. Then of the scalded DSG variant, double clutch box.

The new Leon is really a great and comfortable car that also looks really nice. Now it has become even better with more technology that makes it both more comfortable but also safer.
