Skoda Kodiaq

Skoda's new SUV Kodiaq is a pure display combining strength and intelligence in a tasteful package.

At best, Volkswagen-owned Skoda is making the same journey as Volkswagen itself. To grow from an inconspicuous brand to one that is really involved and gaining market share. Now it's time for the all-new model Kodiaq to roll out and give the competition a really tough match. Cars Collection accompanied the test drive in Mallorca.

Skoda's watchword is "Clever", meaning smart in Swedish. Something they have taken notice of and what is impressive is that they repeatedly present new innovative solutions every time a new model is launched. The Kodiaq is of course filled with these and to name them all we would fill this magazine very quickly. But to pick a few, we can start with the automatic door guards that fold out when you open the doors. This protects both parties' cars in tight parking spaces, for example. While we're on the subject of doors, these contain compartments with associated umbrellas. However, this was already on the Superb model and is originally a feature inspired by Rolls-Royce.

The Kodiaq can be had with either two or three rows of seats. In the version with three, seven people can fit. The second row of seats, whether you choose two or three, is equipped with practical folding tables in the backrests of the front seats. These also contain fold-out cup holders. To make the trip as comfortable as possible, even if you want to take a nap in the back seat, there is a "sleeping package" that includes a blanket and a headrest that can be folded out to support the head laterally. To ensure that it is also comfortable for the driver, there is a heated steering wheel and ventilation in the front seats.

The car and has an adaptive chassis with driving programs to choose from. In the comfort mode, which is symbolized by a cloud, the car swallows most of the road surface, while in the sport mode, both dampers and steering stiffen up for more close contact with the surface. Something that is clearly felt on the winding mountain roads along the coast of Mallorca. Despite relatively provocative driving, the Kodiaq steers very nicely without excessive understeer.

The Kodiaq is equipped with an enhanced sound and infotainment system and with the Skoda Connect app you can control many of the car's functions directly on your mobile phone. In addition, it is possible to get Google Street view and weather service directly on the car's screen. Practical when planning your trip and want to have a little better control and anticipation.

On the engine front, we find a range of options and the best seller in Sweden is expected to be the TDI 190. Together with the DSG automatic gearbox and four-wheel drive, the journey is relaxed and safe. The Kodiaq's off-road capabilities should be well beyond most people who don't plan to really drive off-road. With a smart assistance function, reversing with a trailer is now child's play. You control easily with the joystick-like button with which you adjust the rear-view mirrors.

That the Kodiaq is already a success is shown by the order blocks, which for Sweden show that there may even be a shortage of cars. So if you want to travel in this smart bear, you should hurry to the nearest Skoda dealer.
