Ford Mustang Mach-e

Ford has dropped the curtain on their latest creation, the Mustang Mach-e, and the Cars Collection was on hand in Oslo to see the show.

Many are raising their voices against the utter insanity and wrongness of building a car like the Mach-e and using the Mustang name. Unfortunately, these voices will probably be overruled because now the Mustang Mach-e is here and just as the Cayenne was a success for Porsche, the Mach-e will certainly mean a lot to Ford. A Ford that really attracts attention and something that draws customers to it.

The first thing I reacted to when I saw leaked images of the Mach-e was the so-called nose cone the car has because it lacks a grill

The design of the Mach-e is in compact SUV format with a sloping rear window. One of the competitors being talked about is the Tesla Model Y, but also the Audi e-Tron Sportback which is being presented at the time of writing at the LA Motorshow. The first thing I reacted to when I saw leaked images of the Mach-e was the so-called nose cone the car has because it lacks a grill; even the car that was available at the presentation in Oslo had the same front. But in pictures of blue version of Mach-e you can see that there was a different type of front more like a traditional grill. How it looks in reality is hard to say, but in the pictures that front looks better.

The interior is dominated by the giant screen in the centre of the dashboard. Otherwise, the quality and material choices did not feel particularly premium, but the car shown was both a hand-built prototype, so you can probably expect more from the production-ready version. However, the cabin was spacious with plenty of room in the back seat as well. Thanks to the lack of a conventional front engine, a large space has instead been created that swallows 100 litres. With the rear seats folded down, the Mach-e holds a whopping 1,420 litres in the back.

Performance on the Mach-e is from 258 horsepower for the entry-level model and up to 465 horsepower for the version with the GT extension. The Mach-e will come in a number of different versions with both rear and all-wheel drive. Some versions will have 150 kW fast charging. The range, depending on the version, should be up to 600 kilometres for the top version with extended battery pack, or 540 km if you choose to drive with four-wheel drive instead of rear-wheel drive. On the top version, the sprint from standstill to hundred should take less than five seconds.

It's no wonder people are reacting strongly to what Ford has done with the Mustang Mach-e. But nothing is sacred anymore and if there is the slightest opportunity to mint coins and create something new from something old, there is probably no company that does not take that opportunity. The Mustang Mach-e is guaranteed to sell like hotcakes whether old Mustang worshipers like it or not. We are looking forward to the test drive and will of course get back to you when the time is right.
